Why literature matters

Literature has always been an important influencing factor in my life. I’ve been reading steadily for as long as I can remember, and I enjoy it immensely. It has had a big impact on my life and the way I see things. Literature has always been a way for me to escape into a world different from my own and experience a different life through someone else’s perspective. Reading has broadened my mind in ways that other things haven’t, and the more I learn about it, the more I want to keep learning.

Literature matters to me because it opens my eyes to things I would not have thought about before. It is a chance to experience a perspective completely different from my own. When I read something new that has come from someone else’s creative mind, it helps me to open my mind and try to see the world the way they see it. When authors have the ability to create a whole other world different from what I’ve experienced, it makes me imagine things that I would have never thought possible on my own. Many of these powerful stories can subtly influence the minds of those reading them, and that’s what make them stand out.

Literature also informs me about things that I did not know about before. A lot of the things that I’ve learned throughout my life have come from books. There are books about nearly every topic you can think of, and even within those there are so many varying opinions that you can read about. Reading about different topics in literature has educated me about a variety of topics I wasn’t aware of before. Many books have even just shown me a new perspective on an old idea that I probably would have never thought about on my own. It has changed my life and given me a temporary escape from reality, and given me a place that I can turn to that engages my mind.

I expect this class to alter my perceptions about literature in the same way it’s been altered in the past. My opinions on literature are constantly changing and evolving as I learn to appreciate it in a new way. I hope that through this class I will learn to see the books I love in a new way. I love to read, and I’m hoping this class will help me gain a new appreciation for literature, but also help me learn how to interpret it better. I expect that in this class I’ll learn more about what literature is and how big an impact it has had on the lives of those it has touched.


I also hope that what I learn in this class will have an impact on how I view the world. Some of my favorite books that I’ve read have had more of an impact on me than I can explain, and learning more about literature can hopefully have the same effect. Learning about literature and the way those authors perceive the world will hopefully influence my perspective on the world and help me see things in a new way.
